Forward Theater Company Announces One-Day Workshop
Saturday, April 24th
Madison, WI -- Forward Theater Company will host a one-day workshop for actors on Saturday, April 24th. The classes, including Auditioning for Musical Theater; Getting a Second Look: How to Make a Great Impression at an Audition; Learning Your Lines: the Secret of a Great Audition Monologue; and Picking a Fight: Stage Combat Basics, will be conducted at the First United Methodist Church in downtown Madison. Whether they are new to the stage, or more experienced thespians, actors will enjoy learning new skills and polishing their presentations in these workshops, ultimately feeling more comfortable and confident when trying out for productions.
“Auditioning well is such a crucial skill,” said Richard Ganoung, a member of Forward Theater’s advisory company, and an organizer of the workshop. “In these classes we want to help area actors learn how to make a great first impression by really showcasing their strengths and their individual talents.” He added, “It’s also a great way to get ready for Forward Theater’s open auditions, which will be held later this spring.”
Morning session classes from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Auditioning for Musical Theater
Renowned musical theater actress Colleen Burns will discuss how to choose the right song for an audition, and offer insight on perfecting your performance. An accompanist will be provided, and students are encouraged to bring sheet music for the song they wish to work on.
Getting a Second Look: How to Make a Great Impression at an Audition
Preparing a monologue is only part of the challenge in giving a great professional audition. Learn how to make the most of your photo (head shot) and resume, and impress your audience with cold readings and your general comportment during the audition process. This workshop will be led by professional actor Richard Ganoung, a member of Actor’s Equity and the Screen Actors Guild, and Forward Theater Company Artistic Director Jennifer Uphoff Gray.
Afternoon session classes from 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Learning Your Lines: The Secret of a Great Audition Monologue
Auditioners have only a few minutes to turn in a fabulous performance – make those minutes count! Learn what to look for and what to avoid in choosing audition monologue material. Then receive personalized coaching on a two minute contemporary monologue of your choice from Forward Theater Company Artistic Director Jennifer Uphoff Gray and veteran American Players Theatre actor Sarah Day.
Picking a Fight: Stage Combat Basics
Utilizing his many years of stage combat experience, actor Michael Herold will conduct an introduction to fight choreography focusing on safety and physical awareness on the stage. Participants will learn the basics of stage fighting (ie: slaps, punches, kicks, etc.) while also focusing on “acting the fight,” selling the reality of the violence to the audience. Students are asked to wear comfortable clothes and tennis shoes.
The workshops will each be taught by members of Forward Theater’s advisory company; actors and directors with decades of professional experience. Space is limited to twelve participants per class to ensure individualized, one-on-one instruction. Workshops are open to anyone 16 years old and up, and participants may sign up for both morning and afternoon classes.
